Building and Plumbing Inspector

The City of Mattoon has an opening for a Code Enforcement Officer with a specialty in plumbing and building inspection.  Primary responsibilities will include enforcement of all plumbing and building codes, property maintenance and other ordinances as required for the City of Mattoon.  Applicant must have the ability to review plans to determine compliance with City State and National Codes, to perform field inspections of plumbing, sewer, mechanical, building installations, property maintenance complaints, and to prepare and send notices of violations of the codes.  
 
The successful candidate must have a thorough working knowledge of the standards, materials and methods used in the installation of plumbing, sewer, mechanical and building systems; be well versed in the approval methods of construction for safety to persons and property; have a working knowledge of the State of Illinois Plumbing Code as well as have the ability to learn the modern property maintenance and building codes for the City of Mattoon. Applicant must have a valid State of Illinois Plumbers License and at least five years experience in the installation of plumbing and sewer systems.    
 
Applicant must be able to interpret and apply building plans, blueprints, plumbing diagrams and engineering drawings.  The position requires exposure to noise, dust, and inclement weather conditions and the physical condition necessary for light to moderate lifting, carrying, bending, crawling, climbing, walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time. The position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills, public relations skills by maintaining an effective working relationship with contractors, builders and the general public, as well as have a valid Illinois driver’s license. Applicants with working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel strongly preferred.
