‘Pocket park’ slated at 19th and Western Via JC-TC

MATTOON — The southeast corner of Western Avenue and 19th Street gained a mural last fall and now it is gaining a small park.

City street crews have started creating a “pocket park” on a small plot of empty land located on the north side of the Greyhound Bus Lines/Checker Top Cab building. This park will sit directly in front of the mural that professional artist Jonathan Laidacker placed on the east-facing brick wall of the adjacent storefront building.

“There are some neat things they are going to do in the design of the park that are going to accent the mural,” said Justin Grady, chairman of the Mattoon Arts Council, which commissioned the mural.
