The City of Mattoon is constructing a new waste water treatment facility near Riley Creek on North 6th Street (CR600E). The facility will treat storm water that overflows from the combined sewer system before it reaches Riley Creek and the environment.
Treatment includes screening, settling, chlorination, and dechlorination. The project is being funded, in part, by a low interest loan from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency’s (IEPA) Water Pollution Control Loan Program. A portion of the funds for the IEPA loan program are made available by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
This project is intended to protect the water quality in Riley Creek, which is tributary Kickapoo Creek, and the Embarras River.
