Two police officers standing in front of a police vehicleThe Mattoon Police Department is a full-service law enforcement agency, administered by a Chief of Police and a Deputy Chief, sworn police officers and support staff.

Officers patrol 9.8 square miles within the corporate city limits, serving a population of 18,500. The department conducts criminal investigations and sponsors and participates in public functions and public assistance programs throughout the community.

Inside the Mattoon PD

The Mattoon Police Department is home to 38 Officers, five full-time and part-time support staff, and two police canines. The department is administered by a Chief and Deputy Chief. Twenty-nine officers comprise the Patrol Division which is divided into four squads working 12-hour shifts. An Investigative Division is staffed with four detectives. Additionally, Mattoon PD has two officers assigned to partner with Mattoon Community Schools. The department also has personnel assigned to assist the East Central Illinois Drug Task Force in narcotics investigations.

The department handles approximately 35,000 calls per year while patrolling 9.8 square miles within the City of Mattoon. An average total of 300,000 miles are driven per year by eight patrol units in a department that is always open, and always ready to serve you.

Special Programs at the Mattoon Police Department

Citizen’s Academy

The Mattoon Police Department, in conjunction with other area agencies, hosts a Citizen’s Police Academy each fall. The purpose of the academy is to strengthen cooperation and understanding between the police department and members of the community that we serve. Nine weekly sessions of the academy include instruction in judicial process, criminal law, crime scene processing, firearms, use of force, and much more.

Volunteer Program

The Mattoon Police Department is proud to partner with the Coles County Council on Aging in a Senior Volunteer Program. Civic minded retirees with a wealth of experience donate their time and skills to the department. Volunteers provide clerical and administrative support, and are often the first smiling face to greet persons within the lobby.

Victim Notification Program

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), is committed to protecting the public and ensuring that the rights of victims are carefully observed. HSI administers the Victim Notification Program which allows eligible victims and witnesses to obtain reliable and timely information regarding a criminal alien’s release from custody. However, victims and witnesses are required to register with our agency in order to receive notification of a criminal alien’s release.
