PRESS RELEASE
Tuesday, August 16, 2022

The City of Mattoon has received a grant award in the amount of $525,000 from the Rebuild Illinois “Downtowns and Main Streets Capital Program”. The funding will be used for Streetscaping Improvements on Broadway Avenue from 16th Street to 14th Street.

The grant awards were announced by Governor JB Pritzker’s Office and the Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (DCEO) on Monday. There were 50 grant awards totaling $106 million statewide.

The City of Mattoon has completed a series of Streetscaping, Parking Lot, and Park improvements on Broadway Avenue from 21st Street to 16th Street over the course of the last 11 years. The current project includes the last 2 blocks of Streetscaping from 16th Street to 14th Street.

Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2023, and to be completed in the fall. The work will include sidewalk & parking accessibility improvements, ornamental street lighting, and landscaping.

All of the recent improvements to the downtown area have been designed to attract visitors and to support our local businesses. The Downtowns and Main Streets Capital Program was created with those same goals in mind. The primary emphasis of the grant program is reinvestment in downtown areas that experienced economic impacts during the Covid 19 Pandemic.

Thank you,
