Renovations at one of the best looking corners in downtown Mattoon is nearly complete.  After months of demolition and overhaul work, the Progress Square transformation at the southeast corner of Broadway and 17th St is finally taking shape.  New concrete has been poured, new lighting has been installed as has a pedestrian walkway, picnic tables and benches.  The parking lot is now reopen to the public and awaits fencing and landscaping.  City staff is hopeful the fencing and new flagpole will be installed within the next month; landscaping and final touches, including picnic table umbrellas, will be put in this spring.  City Administrator Sue McLaughlin says, "This project has gone through many changes and been a long time in coming.  But we are happy to see it finally take shape and become another gem, along with the newly refurbished depot, in our great downtown."
