Charleston Avenue (IL 16) Roadwork Update

On Friday, crews will be installing detector loops in the eastbound lanes of Charleston Avenue (IL 16). This work will require lane closures, but no other construction activities are expected that day.

Looking ahead, milling operations between 6th Street and Lake Land Boulevard are planned to begin next Tuesday, weather permitting.

Motorists should expect lane closures and are encouraged to use alternate routes when possible to avoid delays. All work is weather dependent and schedules may change.

The City of Mattoon

The City of Mattoon has been awarded TWO Illinois Safe Routes to School grants totaling $500,000 to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility around our schools!

$250,000 for improvements serving Mattoon High School
$250,000 for improvements serving Mattoon Middle School & Williams Elementary School

Planned improvements include:
Sidewalk reconstruction and repairs
ADA-compliant ramps and crossings
New pavement markings and school crossing signage
Radar speed feedback signs to calm traffic
Drainage improvements and enhanced pedestrian safety
features

These projects were identified as priorities through the City’s 2025 Safety Action Plan and were shaped through parent surveys, stakeholder input, and collaboration with Mattoon CUSD #2.

Construction is anticipated to begin following the 2026–2027 school year and be completed before students return in Fall 2027.

Thank you to IDOT, our school district, parents, students, and community partners for helping make these important safety improvements possible!

Annual Fire Hydrant Flow Testing

The Mattoon Fire Department will be conducting annual flow testing, maintenance, and painting of fire hydrants throughout the City of Mattoon beginning July 26, 2021, and will continue until completed. Pending weather, this process should take 4-6 weeks to complete. Utility Payments Update

Due to the spread of Coronavirus, the City of Mattoon will no longer accept payments directly from its customers at the Finance Office at City Hall.  The options for payment are online, by phone (844-701-1148, which is printed on all bills), by mail, or by using the drop box on the north side of City Hall.  Customers are encouraged to set up automatic payments by bank draft.  Those wishing to set up Water and Sewer service should contact the Finance Department by phone at 217-235-5483.
