WATER QUALITY UPDATE – July 31, 2025
CURRENT SAMPLE

Sample collected on July 31st showed non-detectable levels of harmful algal bloom neurological toxin in the drinking water at 0.000 ppb which is considered non-detect under the EPA recommended advisory levels of .30 ppb.

We will continue to sample per-EPA guidelines. The next sample date as recommended by the IEPA will be taken on Monday, August 4th. Moving forward test results will be posted to the City’s website when sample results are returned.

PAST SAMPLES
Sample collected on July 28th showed non-detectable levels of harmful algal bloom neurological toxin in the drinking water at 0.042 ppb which is considered non-detect under the EPA recommended advisory levels of .30 ppb.

Sample collected on July 24th showed non-detectable levels of harmful algal bloom neurological toxin in the drinking water at 0.038 ppb which is considered non-detect under the EPA recommended advisory levels of .30 ppb.

Sample collected on July 21st showed non-detectable levels of harmful algal bloom neurological toxin in the drinking water at 0.14 ppb which is considered non-detect under the EPA recommended advisory levels of .30 ppb.

Samples collected on July 16th showed harmful algal bloom neurological toxin in the drinking water at .215 ppb which is under the EPA recommended advisory levels of .30 ppb.

Samples collected on July 17th showed harmful algal bloom neurological toxin in the drinking water at .058 ppb which is considered non-detect under the EPA recommended advisory levels of .30 ppb.

Samples collected on July 18th showed harmful algal bloom neurological toxin in the drinking water at .10 ppb which is considered non-detect under the EPA recommended advisory levels of .30 ppb.

WHAT ACTIONS HAS THE CITY OF MATTOON TAKEN TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM?

The City of Mattoon took the following actions to reduce harmful algal bloom neurological toxin levels:

Contracted with a consultant who recommended both short-term and long-term solutions.

Increased the Powder-Activated Carbon (PAC).
Increased chlorine feed rates.
Performed directional flushing of distribution system based on IEPA recommendations.
Developing long-term treatment options, including lake and plant treatment.

Mattoon in Motion

Mattoon in Motion was created in the fall of 2017 when a cross-section of more than 80 passionate community members came together and participated in a series of planning sessions initiated by the Mattoon Chamber of Commerce, the Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation and the MAPPING community planning program offered by the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs at Western Illinois University, and the City of Mattoon. Mattoon Lightworks is Underway!

Drive through Peterson Park to see a vast array of holiday lights displayed. There are new displays added, with many animated. There will be a live nativity on Friday nights in December. Free Admission with donations accepted. Over 15,000 visitors each year see this great display of holiday lights vividly reflecting off the winter's snow. Peterson Park 500 Broadway Avenue Mattoon, Illinois November 16th– December 25th Sunday—Thursday 5-9pm Friday & Saturday 5-10 pm Live Nativity scenes are from 6-8pm on Fridays in December.
