Moving Forward in Mattoon: DCEO Site Readiness Grant Awarded

Today, we're excited to share that the City of Mattoon has been awarded a $150,000 Illinois Regional Site Readiness Planning Grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO).

This grant will fund engineering and planning studies to prepare a 235-acre industrial site for future development by evaluating the water and sanitary sewer infrastructure needed to serve the area and our community. While these studies happen behind the scenes, they're an important step toward attracting new employers, creating quality jobs, and strengthening our local economy.

This project also builds on the momentum of last year's $2.3 million Regional Site Readiness Capital Grant, which funded substation improvements to increase electrical capacity at Mattoon Enterprise Park. As a result of these investments, the City is developing the infrastructure needed to make our community competitive for future industrial development. Each phase moves us closer to welcoming new businesses, supporting existing employers, and expanding opportunities for current and future generations.

Planning may not always be the most visible part of economic development, but it's one of the most important. By investing in these studies and capacity-building today, Mattoon is proactively preparing industrial sites, reducing development barriers, and positioning our community to compete for new business investment and long-term economic growth.

We are grateful to the State, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, our development partners at Coles Together, participating landowners, and everyone who helped make this project possible. Mattoon in Motion

Mattoon in Motion was created in the fall of 2017 when a cross-section of more than 80 passionate community members came together and participated in a series of planning sessions initiated by the Mattoon Chamber of Commerce, the Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation and the MAPPING community planning program offered by the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs at Western Illinois University, and the City of Mattoon. Mattoon Lightworks is Underway!

Drive through Peterson Park to see a vast array of holiday lights displayed. There are new displays added, with many animated. There will be a live nativity on Friday nights in December. Free Admission with donations accepted. Over 15,000 visitors each year see this great display of holiday lights vividly reflecting off the winter's snow.
