The City of Mattoon

The City of Mattoon is proud to announce we have received a Tourism Attraction Grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) to support improvements at Lake Mattoon.

This project will include new sewer hookups at the West Campground and the addition of laundry facilities to better serve campers and visitors. These upgrades will enhance the overall visitor experience, support extended stays, and strengthen Lake Mattoon as a regional destination.

With a total project investment of approximately $167,000, this is another step forward in supporting tourism, local businesses, and quality of life in our community.

We look forward to sharing progress updates as work moves forward.

The City of Mattoon
Charleston Avenue (IL 16) Roadwork Update

The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced that Howell Paving is expected to begin adjusting manholes and valves along IL 16 (Charleston Avenue) starting Wednesday or Thursday of this week. Motorists should expect lane closures during this phase of the project.

Beginning April 27, crews plan to start surface milling operations between Swords Avenue and 6th Street, with initial resurfacing scheduled to begin May 4. Lane closures will be in place during both milling and resurfacing activities. All work is weather dependent.

Motorists should anticipate lane closures, construction vehicles entering and exiting the work zone, and potential travel delays. Please use caution when traveling through these areas.

Work will also continue between 6th Street and Lake Land Boulevard, where improvements to the signalized intersection are underway. Once signal installation is complete, this section will undergo similar manhole and valve adjustments, followed by milling and resurfacing.

The final pavement surface will be applied after initial resurfacing is completed in both project areas. Additional updates will be shared as the schedule progresses.

We appreciate your patience during this time, as critical upgrades are completed.

2025 City of Mattoon Tree Planting Program

First, a huge thank you to the Lumpkin Family Foundation for funding the tree planting program.  All tree orders have now been placed, and we are awaiting the suppliers to start digging the trees.  Due to the very dry conditions we have been experiencing they are waiting for more moisture to get into the ground so the tree balls will hold together.  The digging of holes for the trees will come first and the actual planting will follow very soon after.  The operation is expected to begin around mid-November and for most of them to be planted by Thanksgiving.  Right [...]
