🌟 Community Update: Continued Progress in Our Neighborhoods 🌟

Dear Mattoon Family,

We’re pleased to share another positive step in our ongoing efforts to revitalize our community! We’ve recently completed the demolition of a vacant property that had become unsafe due to a hole in the roof. This issue had made the house structurally unsound and a potential hazard for the neighborhood.

Part of a Larger Plan:

This demolition is another part of our broader Community Revitalization plan, developed in partnership with the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA). As you may know, we’ve surveyed every home in Mattoon, using a Geographic Information System (GIS) to pinpoint properties like this one that require immediate attention. This is a long term process which will take time, but now that we have access to the data, we are able to take steps to remedy instances of blight in Mattoon.

Why It Matters:

By addressing properties in poor condition, we’re not just removing safety hazards—we’re also opening up new possibilities for our community. Whether it’s future housing developments, green spaces, other community projects, or improving the value of structures nearby these efforts are all about making Mattoon a safer, more vibrant place to live.

Ongoing Efforts:

As always, we’re focused on properties that we can legally and reasonably address. Some properties still require legal action before we can proceed (ex: Brown Shoe), but rest assured, we’re committed to improving our neighborhoods one step at a time.

Your continued support and input are invaluable as we work together to build a brighter future for Mattoon.

Thank you!

Thanks for your help in cleaning up the community. So now who mows these empty lots?

It be better to fix them and rent them out to low income people because no one can afford the rent. That gets charged.

Thank you so much. Please start working on the 1420 N 11th street.

Press Release – November 29, 2022

CITY OF MATTOON, PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT PRESS RELEASE November 29, 2022 The City of Mattoon has been bidding the electric supply for our residents since 2013. We have saved each of our residents and average of $900.00 during that time. Unfortunately, our current bid is expiring. There are no good offers in the electric supply market right now to compete with Ameren’s standard rate. The residents in our program will all be automatically moving to Ameren for 1 year. We intend to re-bid electric supply next fall if market conditions are more favorable. Ameren has mailed the attached notice to [...]

Press Release – Electric Supply Rates

PRESS RELEASE Several area cities and counties have been working together to bid electric supply for our residents. The cities of Charleston, Effingham, Mattoon, and Paris along with Coles County are nearing the end of a contract with a rate of 4.19 cents per kilowatt hour.  This rate will be expiring with the meter readings in December 2022. Recently the buying group, along with our consultant Good Energy, worked to solicit new electric supply bids for our residents. We were unable to secure an offer with a satisfactory combination of price and duration due to the current volatility in the [...]
