Charleston Avenue (IL 16) Roadwork Update – May 28, 2026

On Thursday, May 28, crews will be cleaning up around the manholes. On Friday, May 29th, crews will place the first layer of new pavement (base layer) in the driving lanes along Charleston Ave. from 5th Street to Lake Land Boulevard (US 45). Detector loop installation will also continue between Logan Street and Swords Drive.

Motorists should expect lane closures, construction vehicles, and delays throughout the work area. Please use caution, allow extra travel time, and consider alternate routes when possible. All work is weather dependent and schedules may change.

Charleston Avenue (IL 16) Roadwork Update

Work is underway today along Charleston Avenue (IL 16). Crews are milling the roadway between 5th Street and 11th Street and cutting detector loops between Logan Street and Swords Drive.

On Wednesday, milling will continue from 11th Street to Lake Land Boulevard (US 45). Detector loop work will also continue between Logan Street and Swords Drive.

Motorists should expect lane closures, construction vehicles, and delays in these areas. Please use caution in work zones, allow extra travel time, and consider alternate routes when possible. All work is weather dependent and schedules may change.

IDOT Work on IL 16 (Charleston Ave)

Beginning June 16, 2025 IDOT is scheduled to begin work on IL 16 (Charleston Ave from just west of Swords Drive to Lake Land Boulevard) on June 16th. Howell Paving is the prime contractor and along with several subcontractors they will be setting up traffic control, removing and replacing concrete curb and gutter, removing sidewalk, placing underground cable for new signals and lighting at various locations within the project limits. You can expect to multiple crews at various locations and can expect to experience lane closures throughout the rest of the construction season.

Parks Department – Part-Time Summer Position

The City of Mattoon Parks Department has an opening for a part-time summer position. $16/hour; approximately 20-30 hours a week. Job responsibilities include caring for the downtown landscaping, Heritage Park and Wolf Parks, weeding, planting flowers, trimming bushes and trees, mowing, trash pick up, clean and stock restrooms, assist opening restrooms on weekends, maintenance & upkeep as required. General plant knowledge helpful.
