Algaecide Treatment and Bathymetric Survey – Lake Paradise & Lake Mattoon

The City of Mattoon continues to test drinking water in coordination with the Illinois EPA. Since July 16, 2025, treated tap water has shown non-detectable levels of microcystin, indicating that treatment processes at the water plant remain effective. Source water entering the plant has also tested non-detect since November 11, 2025.

The City has partnered with Aquatic Control to monitor and manage lake conditions. Algaecide treatments are based on dissolved oxygen (DO) levels, with a target of a minimum of 6 mg/L of DO to support healthy water conditions. These levels were reached in November 2025, and thus both lakes were treated on November 6, 2025.

Due to winter ice conditions and based on test results, additional treatment at Lake Paradise was delayed until March 9, 2026. Current test data indicated that Lake Mattoon did not require treatment at that time. The City will conduct additional sampling the week of April 6, weather permitting, to determine whether further treatment is needed in both lakes.

Additionally, the City approved a bathymetric survey for both lakes at the December 16, 2025, City Council meeting. This study will provide important data on water depth, sediment buildup, and overall water storage capacity to support long-term planning and lake management.

The survey began on March 23, 2026, following recent rainfall that brought lake levels to full pool. Data collection is expected to take approximately 15 days, with final results anticipated within six weeks. Findings will be shared with the public upon completion.

The City continues to monitor both lakes and drinking water conditions and additional upgrades at the Water Treatment Plan are planned.
