Watershed Stewardship in Action
The City recently partnered with the University of Illinois Extension to host a Watershed Soft Landing Kit Workshop at the Water Treatment Plant as part of the Watershed Stewards Program.
This hands-on session focused on preparing lawns for Soft Landing Kits, including sod removal methods and site preparation to help ensure successful installation.
We appreciate the continued collaboration with the U of I Extension Center and Coles County Soil and Water Conservation District and the opportunity to support residents in protecting water quality and strengthening our local watershed.

Swords Drive Work 07/31/25 and 08/01/25
Mattoon Public Works Public Notice On July 31st and August 1st, the City’s consultant performing an engineering study on Swords Drive will doing pavement and soil borings along Swords Drive between Broadway Ave. East and Remington Road weather permitting. They will be doing a total of nine (9) borings over the area. While the work is ongoing you can expect to experience lane reduction in the area.

FOR CITY OF MATTOON EVERYONE MAY DRINK THE TAP WATER - July 18, 2025 WHY IS THE ADVISORY LIFTED? The DO NOT DRINK Order that was issued on July 15, 2025 for the City of Mattoon has now been LIFTED. Samples collected on July 15th showed harmful algal bloom neurological toxin in the drinking water at .385 parts per billion (ppb) which is above the EPA recommended advisory levels of .30 ppb. IDOT Work on IL 16 (Charleston Ave)
Beginning June 16, 2025 IDOT is scheduled to begin work on IL 16 (Charleston Ave from just west of Swords Drive to Lake Land Boulevard) on June 16th. Howell Paving is the prime contractor and along with several subcontractors they will be setting up traffic control, removing and replacing concrete curb and gutter, removing sidewalk, placing underground cable for new signals and lighting at various locations within the project limits. You can expect to multiple crews at various locations and can expect to experience lane closures throughout the rest of the construction season.
Parks Department – Part-Time Summer Position
The City of Mattoon Parks Department has an opening for a part-time summer position. $16/hour; approximately 20-30 hours a week. Job responsibilities include caring for the downtown landscaping, Heritage Park and Wolf Parks, weeding, planting flowers, trimming bushes and trees, mowing, trash pick up, clean and stock restrooms, assist opening restrooms on weekends, maintenance & upkeep as required. General plant knowledge helpful.
