Fire Chief Jeff Hilligoss
The Mattoon Fire Department is a full-time career department with thirty-one (31) members. The department consists of thirty shift personnel working 24/48-hour shifts 365 days a year, and a chief officer. They respond from two stations. The department’s apparatus consists of two front-line engine companies, one reserve engine and ambulance, one 95′ aerial, one medium rescue truck, one technical rescue support vehicle, two emergency response trailers, two front line ambulances and two command vehicles. The Mattoon Fire Department is a member of Illinois MABAS and assists 9 surrounding counties in division 26.
Department personnel are trained in several technical rescue disciplines including high-angle rescue, confined space rescue, structural collapse, trench rescue and mass casualty incidents. The department’s twenty-four Paramedics and six emergency medical technicians (EMTs) provide transport emergency medical services to the community.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Mattoon Fire Department is to protect our citizens and visitors by minimizing the loss of life and property resulting from fire, medical emergencies and other disasters in such a manner that will retain the public’s support and confidence in all aspects of service delivery.
This mission will be accomplished through Fire Prevention, Investigation, Public Education and Training efforts as well as by maintaining a quick and effective response for fire suppression, Emergency Medical Services and other emergency and non-emergency functions.

Fire Inspectors
The Mattoon Fire Department has three state certified Fire Inspectors. These inspectors ensure fire and safety codes are followed in new construction, as well as conduct safety inspections on all public buildings within the city limits.
Fire Investigators
The Mattoon Fire Department has four state certified Fire Investigators. These investigators conduct cause and origin investigations at fire scenes in an attempt to determine the cause and origin of fires. These investigators are often assisted at scenes by the Office of the State Fire Marshall’s Arson investigation team.
