CITY OF MATTOON Water Quality Update – June 25, 2026 Current Sample Sample collected on June 15, 2026 showed non-detectable levels of harmful algal bloom neurological toxin in the drinking water at 0.039 ppb which is considered non-detect under the EPA guidelines and the recommended advisory levels of .30 ppb. Temporary Closure: Lake Mattoon Beach Date of Notice: June 25, 2026 Please be advised that Lake Mattoon Beach is temporarily closed to the public until further notice. During our standard biweekly water quality testing, samples indicated elevated levels of E. coli bacteria. Water Quality Details: Current Test Results: Recent samples showed concentrations of 344.8 CFU per 100ml and 325.5 CFU per 100ml.  Safe Threshold Baseline: Guidelines require levels to be strictly below 235 CFU per 100ml before the beach can safely reopen. Howell Paving will start milling on Broadway this Wednesday, June 17th, around 6:30 am.  They will begin by milling everything between 21st Street and 19th Street.  When this section is completed, they will move across 19th Street and begin moving east towards 14th Street.  Milling operations might be completed on Wednesday but could go into Thursday.  The resurfacing portion of the project will follow the milling and will take a couple of days to complete.  They will also be milling and resurfacing the radius returns on side streets during this time.
