Upcoming Municipal Election Dates
The next Municipal Election for the City of Mattoon will occur as follows:
Consolidated Primary – February 23, 2027 (only if required)
Consolidated Election – April 6, 2027
Municipalities that elect officers at nonpartisan primary and general elections shall conduct the elections as provided in the Election Code, except that no office for which the nomination is uncontested shall be included on the primary ballot and no primary shall be held for that office. (10 ILCS 5/7-5; 65 ILCS 5/3.1-20-45)
The 2027 Candidate’s Guide published by the Illinois State Board of Elections provides the requirements for filing nominating papers. The 2027 Candidate’s Guide is expected to be available by July 16, 2026. You can find this under Running for Office at the Illinois State Board of Elections website: https://www.elections.il.gov/

First day to circulate nomination papers for the municipal election.

Petition Filing period for candidates of nonpartisan offices
(Filed not more than 127 nor less than 120 days prior to the date of the consolidated primary)

The City Clerk’s Office will be open Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. between October 19-23, 2026.
The City Clerk’s Office will be open for petition filing on Monday, October 26, 2026 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 pm.
