When there is an upcoming election, this page will list important election-related dates to remember.
There are no municipal elections until 2021, with some details now posted in the Election 2021 section below.

City Council Consolidated Election Date: April 06, 2021
Nominating Petition Materials are available at the City Clerk’s Office beginning on Tuesday, September 22, 2020.

FILING PETITIONS FOR THE
APRIL 06, 2021 ELECTION
The City of Mattoon will be accepting nomination papers from candidates for the municipal offices of Mayor (1) and Commissioners (4) from December 14 through December 21, 2020 in the Office of the City Clerk, 208 North 19th Street, Mattoon, Illinois 61938.
The City Clerk’s Office will be open the hours of:
8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. December 14 – 18, 2020
8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on December 21, 2020
Contact the City Clerk’s Office at 217-235-5654 for admittance into the building for filing purposes. Facial masks must be worn in compliance with the CDC guidelines.

When two or more petitions are simultaneously filed for the same office as of the opening hour of the filing period or within the last hour of the filing deadline, the local election official shall break the tie and determine the order of filing by means of a lottery. Such lottery will be conducted on December 28, 2020 at 8:00 a.m. in the City Clerk’s Office. Candidates need not be present for the lottery.
Those eligible for the Simultaneous Filing Lottery are:
1. Candidates (or their designees) who are waiting in line at 8:00 a.m. to file the petition on the first day of the filing period; or
2. A candidate whose petition is filed by mail and received in the first mail delivery of the first filing day; or
3. A candidate whose petition is received between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on the last day of the filing period (eligible for the lottery for final ballot position only).
All other petitions received shall be deemed filed in the order of actual receipt.
